Mrs. Arlene Smude

Arlene Smude, 69 year old resident of Pierz, MN formerly of Lastrup, MN died Tuesday, June 16 at her home in Pierz, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 19 at 11:00 AM at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup with Father Skaria Johnus officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday and on Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service in Pierz, MN. Parish Rosary will be said at 4:30 P.M. followed by Parish Prayers at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Arlene was born September 7, 1939 in Chicago, IL to the late Joseph Sporlein and Edith Gruber Sporlein Tretter. She was united in marriage to Robert S. Smude on May 30, 1959 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN. The couple moved to Golden Valley, MN in 1959. In 1963, the couple moved north of Lastrup, MN where they farmed for many years. After Robert's death in 2004, Arlene moved to Pierz, MN where she resided at the time of her death. Arlene worked for Munsingwear and was a U.S. Census Taker for a few years. She enjoyed bird watching, agate hunting, playing cards especially, Dealer's Choice and Poker, going to the casino and family activities. Arlene is survived by her children, Susan Piehl and husband, John, of Sauk Rapids, MN, Steve Smude and wife, Brenda, of Royalton, MN and Mary Jo Stangl and husband, Tom, of Pierz, MN; sister, Carol Bell of Pierz, MN; grandchildren, Michael Stangl, Lisa Gorecki, Ryan Smude, Matthew Piehl, Rachel Smude, Katie Piehl, Christa Stangl and great-grandchild, Darrin Gorecki. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Edith; husband, Robert; step-father, Philip Tretter and brother-in-law, Stuart Bell.
