Madelyn V. Voltin

Madelyn Victoria Voltin, age 89 of Chesteron, IN formerly of Pierz, MN passed away Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Waters of Duneland Nursing Home in Chesterton, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 8, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz, MN with the Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday and Monday from 8:00-10:00 A.M. at the Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Pierz, MN. Christian Mothers will pray a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. Sunday afternoon followed by Parish Prayers at 6:00 P.M. Madelyn V. Voltin was born December 25, 1919 to the late Matthew and Mary (Billmeyer) Meyer. She grew up on the family farm near Center Valley, MN. She attended a country school through the eighth grade. Following her schooling, Madelyn lived with her parents on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Frank J. Voltin on May 12, 1938 at Holy Angel's Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN by Fr. Al Kremer. Together, the couple farmed in Granite Township, three miles east of Lastrup, MN for 29 years, while raising seven children. In 1969, Madelyn and Frank sold their farm and moved to Pierz. Madelyn attended St. Cloud Beauty College at the age of 49. Upon completing beauty school, Madelyn opened Madelyn's Beauty Nook in Pierz, MN. In her 60's, along with running her beauty shop, she attended art class at St. Cloud State. She was a woman who wasn't afraid to try anything at any age. Madelyn enjoyed her art painting, Bingo, playing cards, dancing, sewing, ceramics, traveling, baseball games and raising her beautiful flowers. In 1998, Madelyn and Frank moved to South Bend, IN. Frank died June 20, 2003. Madelyn continued to live in South Bend until 2004, when she moved to Pierz, MN living at Country Place. There she enjoyed all the camaraderie and card playing with the other residents. When she was unable to live alone, Madelyn moved back near her family to Chesterton, IN residing there until her death. She was a former member of St. John's Church in Lastrup and presently a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz and a life member of the Christian Mothers of Lastrup and Pierz, MN. Madelyn is survived by her children, Bernette (Arnie) Ratzlaff of Elk River, MN, Dale (Kathy Stokke) Voltin of Coon Lake/ Wyoming, MN, Marvin (Kris Charon) Voltin of Eden Prarie, MN, Marlin (Jim) Johnson of Champlin, MN, Mary Athmann of South Bend, ID, Bonnie Thanos of Chesterton, IN, Carol (Tom) Gyuriak of South Bend, IN; 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents; sisters, Kathryn Crotty, Loretta Sitzman, Hildegard Duschner, Ida Dahman, Ursula Bednar, Margaret Weiss & Theresa Kastanek; brothers, Walter (Mike), Reinhard, Wilfred and Sylvester Meyer. Casket Bearers are Bruce Hoheisel, Mark Boser, Todd, Jeff, Craig, Kyle & Brett Voltin and John & Michael Thanos.
