Gallus, OSC, Fr. David, died on the morning of Wednesday, December 5, from lung cancer. Fr. Dave was born on February 19, 1939, to George and Julia (Opatz) Gallus of North Prairie, MN. He attended Crosier Seminary in Onamia, MN, from 1953-1959 before joining the Crosier novitiate in Hastings, NE, in August of 1959. Fr. Dave was ordained June 4, 1966, in Fort Wayne, IN, and was assigned to the Crosier missions in Asmat, Papua, Indonesia, from 1967-1990. He served in parochial and administrative positions in the rainforest of Asmat over the course of these years, with particular specialties in aviation and computer support. After his return from the missions, Fr. Dave served as the Crosier Province Mission Director while living with the Crosier Community in Anoka, MN. He also served as one of the Mille Lacs Area "cluster" Pastors in the Diocese of St. Cloud from 2004-2009. Fr. Dave was very active in the promotion of human rights all his life and served on many human rights commissions, including most recently the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions and the Mille Lacs Area Human Rights Commission. Fr. Dave was also instrumental in developing the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN, which promotes the culture and art of the Asmat people. Fr. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Tom, Ken, Jerry, and Jim. He is survived by his sisters Claudette Jennessen, Joan Wynne, Mary Emerick, and by his brothers Bernie, Ron, Bob, and Larry, and all his confreres in the Crosier Community. The reception of the body at the Crosier Priory Church of the Holy Cross in Onamia, MN, will be on Sunday afternoon, December 9 at 3:00 PM. A time for remembrance for the sharing of stories and memories will begin at 4:00 PM and solemn Advent Vespers will be celebrated with the Crosier Community at 5:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Priory Church at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 10, with visitation beginning there at 9:30 AM. A lunch in Holy Cross Center will follow the Mass. Burial will be in the Priory cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Fr. David Gallus, OSC, Education Scholarship for continuing education in the areas of justice and human rights.
