Emma Ann Girtz was born on May 29, 1916 in Pierz Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to the late Theodore J. & Josephine (Bednar) Girtz. She attended country school. She was united in marriage to Joseph Peine, Jr. on February 18, 1935 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz, MN. The couple farmed in Agram Township before moving to Lastrup where they continued farming. She owned and operated Ma's Cafe in Lastrup for many years. She also cooked at various restaurants in the surrounding area. In retirement, she enjoyed quilting, upholstered and mended for many. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, traveling, gardening and her house plants. One of her favorite sayings was, "There isn't anything I can't fix". She was a faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. Emma knew a lot of people and if she didn't, it didn't take long for a new friendship to form. Years ago, her family lost count of the many quilts she made or the zippers she put in or the holes she patched. She truly lived her life to the fullest. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Leonard (Kathy) of Chaska, MN, Bernie (Ellwood) Jacobson of Howard, SD and Randy (Linda) Peine of Cambridge, WI; son-in-law, Jeron Kapsner of Lastrup; sisters, Lorraine Gohl of Pierz, MN, Celesta "Sally" Meyer of Pierz, MN and Marie O'Donnell of California; 17 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph (1976); daughter Gladys Kapsner; sister, Betty Olson and brother, Herbert Girtz.
