Dorothy Elizabeth (Johannes) Tykwinski, 91 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, died Thursday, March 5 at St. Ottos Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 11at St. Marys Catholic Church with Father Joseph Herzing officiating.A visitation will be held from 9:00-11:30 A.M. on Wednesday at the church. The burial will be held at 2:00 P.M. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. The Christian Mothers will pray the rosary at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at the church.
Dorothy E. Johannes was born March 26, 1923 in Little Falls, MN to Bernard Barney and Josephine (Smith) Johannes.At a young age the family moved to Anoka, MN where her parents farmed and where she went to grade school.She then moved back to Little Falls and resided at the Hubners Boarding House while she attended St. Francis High School and graduated with the class of 1941.During World War II, she worked as a decoder for the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department. On March 6, 1946 she was united in marriage to Walter Francis Tykwinski at St. Francis Xavier Church in Little Falls, MN.Having married a career military man they lived in a number of different states where Walter was stationed. They finally settled back in Little Falls, MN.In 1970, Dorothy received her LPN Diploma from Brainerd Vocational School and began nursing at St. Gabriels Hospital. She retired after 20 years of nursing.She then became a volunteer at St. Gabriels Hospital and taught CCD at St. Marys School.To keep active she worked part time for the Senior Companion program. She was a member of the Christian Mothers and St. Marys Church. Dorothy enjoyed reading, knitting, flower beds and raising the couples 10 children. She was a faithful volunteer and was always willing to help others.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Frances (Dale) Janson, Virginia Vauls, Michael (Anita) Tykwinski, John (Rita) Tykwinski, David (Kim) Tykwinski, James Tykwinski, Mark (Anna) Tykwinski, Judienne Tykwinski, Paul (Vanessa) Tykwinski; 26 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter F. Tykwinski; daughter, Margaret Mary Tykwinski; grandsons, Aaron Tykwinski and Nicolas Tykwinski; son-in-law, Langston Vauls; sisters, Katherine Moss and Alice McDermett; brothers, William Johannes, Alex Johannes and Cyril Johannes; sisters-in-law, Magdaline Johannes and Bernice Johannes; brothers-in-law, Chester Moss and James McDermett.
