Dennis G. Holmen

Dennis G. Holmen, 81 year old resident of Upsala, MN died Friday, January 4 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 8 at 1:00 PM at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN. with Rev. Craig Johnson. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Friends may call from 11-1 PM on Tuesday at the church in Upsala, MN. Dennis was born February 14, 1926 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to the late George and Olive (Johnson) Holmen. He grew up and graduated from high school in Upsala, MN. After his schooling he was drafted into the United State Military serving our country during World War II. Dennis received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Luzon, Philippines. He was united in marriage to Peggylou Miller on May 14, 1955 at the Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN where Dennis worked for 30 years as Operating Room Technician at the Veterans Hospital. The couple moved to Upsala, MN in 1981 and resided on a farm until moving into the town of Upsala in 2002. Dennis moved into the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN in October 2007 where he resided at the time of his death. Dennis enjoyed snowmobiling, driving his farmall tractor and spending time outdoors. He really enjoyed his time he spent on his brothers strawberry farm in Upsala, MN. Dennis was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN, 1st Evangelical Free Church in Minneapolis, MN, Albany American Legion. Dennis is survived by his wife, Peggylou Holmen of Upsala, MN; son, Gary Holmen and wife, Tammy, of Broomfield, CO; daughter, Karen Holmen of Eagan, MN; twin siblings, James Holmen and wife, Carolyn, of Fridley, MN, Jeanttte Pangrac and husband, Vernon, of Bowlus, MN, brother, David Holmen and wife, Shirley, of Upsala, MN; sister-in-law, Fran Holmen of Upsala, MN; grandchildren, Anne Holmen, Jeff Holmen, Kyle Kalstabakken, Kristin Kalstabakken; great-grandchild, Rayna Holmen. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Olive Holmen; brother, Leonard Holmen.
