Bernard James Wunderlich, 93 year old resident of Rice, passed away on Friday, December 6 at his home with his family by his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 17 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole with Father Greg Sauer officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of the service on Tuesday at the church. The burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery in Rice, MN. 

Bernard James Wunderlich was born on February 16, 1931 in Holding Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to the late Frank and Elsie (Kiley) Wunderlich. He attended a rural country school. As a young man, Bernard worked on the Iron Ore Boats on the Great Lakes. He also rode the freight trains from town to town looking for work in his mid-teens. Bernard was united in marriage to Margaret Aschenbrenner on August 21, 1954 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Minneapolis for two years. In 1956, the couple moved to a farm in Two Rivers Township near Royalton. In 1964, the couple moved to their current home and farm in Brockway Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with four children, Stephen, Patricia, James, Thomas. The couple farmed in Brockway Township for 60 plus years. He loved to talk about his days working on the Great Lakes and riding the freight trains. Bernard enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play baseball. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. 

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 70 years, Margaret of Brockway Township; children, Stephen (Judy) Wunderlich of Foreston, Patricia (Doc) Berscheid of Breezy Point, James (Mary) Wunderlich of Avon, Thomas (Kim) Wunderlich of Rice; grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Lohnes, Lisa (Lee) Bushmaker, Troy (Janelle) Wunderlich, Nicole (John) Kim, Abby (Brady) Gertken, Alissa (Alex) Burton and Kayla Wunderlich and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Margaret Huls, Christopher Wunderlich, Lucille Kampa, Leonard Wunderlich, Norman Wunderlich, Eddie Wunderlich and Alvina Kurtz.
