Aloysius George Sobiech was born on May 8, 1920 in North Prairie to the late Stephen & Elizabeth (Trutwin) Sobiech. He married Marie Opatz on November 10, 1942 in Bowlus. They had nine children. They farmed for 38 years near North Prairie. Aloysius retired from farming and went to work at Reis Lumber Yard in Bowlus, retiring at the age of 80 to take care of Marie who passed away in 2003. In his younger years, Aloysius was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting & fishing and playing baseball. He was also known to dance a polka. For many years, he went deer hunting in Northome and later in life hunted in Wyoming as well. He enjoyed fishing with his family and friends at Swan and Big Birch Lakes. He was active in Royalton and Bowlus Sportsmen's clubs. He was a lifelong member of North Prairie parish from baptism to death. For many years, he was very active in the Parish Council as well as Perpetual Adoration. Aloysius had a deep faith. Each day would begin and end in prayer. He always said the Holy Spirit was his best buddy and always protected him during life. Aloysius had a soft spot in his heart for animals and enjoyed horses and loved to talk about his earlier days with his dogs and work horses. Aloysius loved to play cards. In our world he was the best! If no one was around, he would challenge himself by playing solitaire. Another of his favorite pastimes was to listen to our Minnesota Twins. Aloysius loved playing "states and capitals" with his children and grandchildren. Who could ever forget that big finger in your face and the fast ten count. Dad taught all his children to be competitive when we were playing cards, horseshoes or in life. Aloysius was not only a loyal and loving husband, but a very dedicated and proud father and grandfather as well! Dad died peacefully---his earthly trials are over---his spirit freed. He is survived by his children, Carole (Dave) Dockendorf of Garrison, Richard (Linda) of North Prairie, Doris (Bob) Roth of Bella Vista, AR, Wayne (Kathy) of Little Canada, MN, Gerard (Donna) of Wyoming, MN, Gary (Karen) of Brooklyn Park, Mary Lou (Edward) Janski of Royalton, Arlene Sobiech of St. Paul and Connie (Jeff) Looft of St. Louis Park; sister, Jean of Hopkins; 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death his parents; wife, Marie (Oct. 2, 2003) and nine siblings.
